Psychological Therapy

Therapy

Therapy is a personal process, and everyone’s therapeutic journey will be different. Some people will have more sessions, or a different type of therapy, depending on their needs and their goals for treatment. We provide a tailored therapeutic service to ensure the therapy you receive supports you in the right way.

We offer individual therapy in person in Dundee or online with one of our qualified and registered Clinical Psychologists. They can draw on a wide range of therapeutic models to best meet your needs, and work in collaboration with you to help you meet your goals.

What kind of difficulties can you help me with?

As Clinical Psychologists we are trained to treat a range of different mental health difficulties. It isn’t possible to list them all, but some common difficulties we treat are:

  • Anxiety
  • Phobia
  • Depression/Low Mood
  • Low Self-Esteem
  • Distressing Thoughts or Emotions
  • Panic attacks
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
  • Reactions to stressful life circumstances
  • Trauma

In addition to specific difficulties like the ones noted above, people often are looking for therapy for other reasons including:

  • Difficulties managing life transitions
  • Coping with physical ill health
  • As an opportunity to reflect on current functioning
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Bereavement
  • Personal reflection and discovery

This is by no means an exhaustive list, so if the difficulties you are experiencing aren’t listed here please Contact Us

What therapies do you offer?

Clinical Psychologists are trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), along with many other types of therapies and therapeutic approaches. The therapeutic model used in your treatment will be suggested based on what best meets your needs, and following your assessment, your Psychologist will have an idea of what approach will suit you best. They will discuss this with you and explain why they are suggesting a specific therapy or approach. If you have a preference for a specific therapy, you can discuss this with your Psychologist. We draw on a wide range of therapeutic models, but the therapies we use most often are described below.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a treatment that has a good evidence base for treating most mental health difficulties. It looks at how our thoughts and behaviours influence our emotions which in turn, influence the way we think and what we do. Treatment focusses on challenging unhelpful thinking and encourages you to change your behaviour. CBT focusses on the here and now, and involves practicing things you learn in-between sessions.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a newer approach which has an emerging evidence base. ACT focusses on making changes in line with what is important in our lives. It will help you to identify core areas in your life that are important to you. It will then help you to move towards these using techniques including mindfulness.

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) Approaches

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) was originally designed for the treatment of depression, but the evidence-base for its effectiveness in treating other mental health difficulties is growing. IPT focuses on you and your relationships, working on the premise that our relationships are at the centre of psychological difficulties. IPT-informed approaches teach you the skills to communicate with others in a way that better suits your needs and helps to address problems that are sustaining those difficulties.

Emotion Regulation Approaches

Sometimes we might struggle to regulate our emotions. We may feel ‘cut off’ from our emotions and feel numb or zombie like. We may feel like our emotions overwhelm us and we tend to react in ways we aren’t proud of. These approaches uses techniques to help you feel more in control of your emotions – to feel connected to them, but not overwhelmed by them

Where do I get therapy?

The location of your therapy will depend on the Psychologist you are working with. Our clinics are based inTay Therpay Rooms in Dundee. We also offer online video consultation sessions.

Therapy sessions are 55 minutes in length.

How do I make an appointment?

If you would like to make an appointment with one of our Clinical Psychologist, please email us at admin@linkatpsychology.co.uk and tell us a bit about thie kind of support you are looking for.

We offer a free 20 minute telephone consultation for all new clients, which gives us an opportunity to get an idea of what help you are looking for, and gives you the opportunity to ask any questions or tell us about any worries you might have. At the end of this telephone conversation we can suggest the next steps. This might be to book an appointment with one of our Clinical Psychologists or, if we feel we’re not the right service for you, we will tell you and suggest other places you might look to for support.

What happens in a first appointment?

If we think we can help you to meet your goals we will offer you an assessment with one of our Clinical Psychologists. At this assessment appointment, you will meet your Clinical Psychologist and have the opportunity to talk about what has brought you to therapy.

They will likely ask you lots of questions about your current difficulties and what your goals are. They might also ask about your past. This can help us to understand your current difficulties, but you don’t have to talk about the past if you don’t want to.

At the end of this session your Clinical Psychologist should be able to give you an idea of what treatment approach they think will help you, and the plan going forward. This is a collaborative process and any decisions will be made together.

If you decide to engage in the treatment plan suggested by your Clinical Psychologist you will continue to see them for a number of sessions. Treatment is unique and individual to each person and will take a different number of sessions for each person. If you are aware that you are only able to afford a certain number of sessions, discuss this with your Clinical Psychologist. You will then be able to decide together what goals to focus on.
